XIV Premio de Novela por Entregas de La Voz de Galicia

A woman is startled by the police’s arrival at her home to arrest her husband, a local politician, on charges of child sexual abuse. “A dúbida” (“Doubt”) begins at this point and develops through the psychological conflict that the main character, Deli, faces as she begins to wonder whether she really knows her husband. The novel was initially published in serial form in the Galician daily La Voz de Galicia. Its fast pace does not forgo a deep look into the issue of child sexual abuse and corruption. The jury of the Premio de Novela por Entregas La Voz de Galicia highlighted how “the novel showcases the mastery of the author as narrator in presenting a story that keeps the readers hooked while addressing a difficult and rare topic in Galician literature with literary finesse and rigour”.

2015 | Narrativa

Everybody seems to know MK, the singer of the moment, with her amazing voice and her eccentric girlfriend, Gaia. But, who is MK? What happens when the lights are out? When the last tour comes to an end? When mikes are off? Maybe silence is needed to find oneself. Maybe even music does not make much sense without those soundless spaces. It is precisely then that MK goes back to her broken roots, of the disruption of her childhood in rural Tamil Nadu  by the imposed migration back to the metropolis. In the broken sounds of broken pots, MK writes and leads her steps towards the place where the crow’s caws become music.

2014 | Narrativa

Saínza Combarro, a Galician war journalist working for the BBC embodies the dilemma of choosing between cynicism and resignation or looking for an intimate thruth when witnessing the most horrifying events. Through her, this novel speaks of the importance of journalism in situations of conflict, but mainly of the importance to find an ethical relationship to the forgotten and silent human beings who are on the other side of the news. Even, paradoxically enough, journalists themselves.

Dende o conflito is also a tribute to women journalists who were capable of bringing their voice to armed conflict. With Saínza Combarro we travel from Congo to Iraq, from Ethiopia to Afghanistan, from Sri Lanka to Haiti, but also to Berlin, Barcelona, Santiago de Compostela or Vilalba. This is a novel about journalism, about war, about the abyss between the North and the South, about poverty, hunger but mainly about the value of friendship and love, about the essence of those things that really matter in life.

Gaia is one of those people with a core hard like an oak tree. She claims the mountains and forrests as world and resists domestication in any of its forms. Like a solitary animal, Gaia goes through spaces thinking of herself as an ecological element with a vocationto change the humus into revolutions. One fine day, her work as an interpreter leads her to  cross paths with the sucessful singer MK. At this point, her certainties evaporate or maybe it is this the chance to let her roots reach the sky. En vías de extinción is a novel that speaks of the worlds that are changing, of cultural diversity, the gaps between rural and urban cultures and the potential to make the margin, the centre of our own lives.

2009 | Narrativa
Traducida ao italiano por Edizioni dell´Urogallo, 2013.

Pirata explores contemporary issues such as gender identity, power, voice and sexual orientation against the backdrop of the Golden Age of Piracy and the real-life character of Mark/Mary Read, one of the two female pirates on board the “Williams”. Pirata explores the conflict of a character brought up as a man in a female body and therefore trapped in gender definitions. With the help of Anne Bonney, her rebellious co-pirate and lover and also Madame Ebony, a former slave, Mark/Mary Read manages to come to her own definition of the self, neither here nor there, ready to die for her space and voice in the world. The novel develops in three chapters, Blue, Red and Black. Readers find out only at the end of the first chapter that the male main character whose thoughts they have been sharing is in fact a woman, in love with another woman. This chapter has been described by some critics as the most surprising beginning of a novel in contemporary Galician literature so far. Mark/Mary Read has to face her own circumstances in Red, where the actual exploits of the Williams are followed in a literary manner until their ship is finally captured at sea. During this second chapter the novel also explores, through action and dialogues, the need for women to have a voice in history. The final chapter, Black, brings to life the actual trial against both women. Pirata is a feminist contemporary novel where adventure and the historical meet to give voice to the political
